Nijmegen coffee and lunch tips

Hey food lovers!

Lazy Penguin here. Lazy Piggie asked me to write about the culinary treats of Nijmegen. Pheeew. That’s quite the challenge, because there’s a loooot to taste in this lovely city! Well, here goes. Let’s start with the coffee and lunch places.

De blonde pater

Consistently excellent.

Well-known and always bustling with people, I just can’t fault de blonde pater. Consistently excellent coffee and food, friendly service, located in my favourite street in Nijmegen (Langehezelstraat) and very fair prices. If you want to try the tried and tested lunchbar in Nijmegen with no margin for error, go here.
Recommended drinks:
If you like your coffee a lot, like, you like it to be a lot, try the ‘espropress’. French-pressed coffee enough to fill your entire coffee-craving mug. Also try their eight treasure tea. There’s nothing quite like it.
Recommended Food:
Everything is good. Seriously. Everything. If I had to choose one thing though, try the ‘pater deli’ for a real treat. A mountain of thinly sliced marinated meat on a bun, you simply can’t go wrong.

Sid en Liv

Well made sandwiches and coffee in your- uhhh… Their living room.

This cosy lunchroom wins the price for bringing your home to a cafe. With an idyllic garden behind the cafe, this is the place to go if you like your cafes with a intimate, warm atmosphere.
Recommended drinks:
They have a great selection of teas- dare I say the best in Nijmegen I tasted? Yes I do.
Recommended Food:
Their ‘flammkuchen’, an imported food from our German neighbours, are a delight and quite unique in Nijmegen. I also loved their hot dog for its well-balanced flavours. All food is recommended though.

Scandanavion delights.

A unique concept in Nijmegen: choose two smaller sandwiches to complete a lunch meal. I simply adore this concept. You mean I get to try more food?! Yes please. The interior is sober yet stylish, Scandinavian style. Just a lovely cafe.
Recommended drinks:
In my memory nothing really stood out. Just try whatever!

Recommended foods:
Who cares?! Just mix and match and try different things with your lunch partner for maximum taste variety! (I liked the carpaccio with truffle mayo, but I’m a sucker for truffle. Go for your gut feeling. Get it? :D)

This was the lunch part, more tips coming soon..

Captain Joe ~ The freshest seafood in Nijmegen

I didn’t expect a seafood bar in Nijmegen, it is so far from the sea!
Lazy Penguin discovered a new seafood restaurant in Nijmegen and suggested to make a video. Trusting Lazy Penguin’s exceptional food nose, I said: Let’s do this!

Food & Menu

Captain Joe serves cold and hot sea food. We went for the cold dishes, so we don’t have much experience with the hot food. But hot lobster on Monday for 24,50 euro sounds good! (For more info about the cold food, please watch the video.)

Lazy Penguin also ordered two white wines with the seafood. ‘Senora Rosa Chardonnay’ and their home wine ‘Holy Cow’. The ‘Holy Cow’ was really nice with the seafood, not too bitter. I also took a sip.

After all the seafood we were okay full, so still place for a dessert. The dessert where little art pieces by themselves.

So I also made an art piece:

We went to the restaurant at 17:00, quite early for dinner, so we had the place for ourselves. After we were done with filming and eating the place was full with other customers and it was on a Monday!
Don’t forget to make a reservation if you want to eat around 18:00.

My verdict: really tasty and fresh seafood. I particularly liked the “chicken” vongoles and the razor shell salad. I was disappointed there was no cold lobster in the Fruits de Mer, so the next time I want to eat the hot lobster. Yes, that makes a lot of sense. Have a lovely day!

Five Restaurants in February

A quick post for this week, since I don’t have a lot time to work on a big post. Looking back at the restaurants I have visited in February¬†I concluded that there are quite some places¬†I recommend. They have the food, which you will go back for. Sorry to the restaurants I didn’t post about, you were nice, but… it’s not you, it’s me.

Fika – Nijmegen

A Scandinavian lunch/brunch place. I heard from people that Scandinavian food is about quality and damn these sandwiches where good! Fresh ingredients, delicious smörrebröd and okay drinks. The tastes are quite strong, which I like. Next time I have to try the other sandwiches.

The Black Fox РNijmegen

theblackfox nijmegen

This is a butcher / meat workshop / restaurant. They get there cows from milk farms, so the cows were milk producing cows before. So the meat¬†is a bit tougher than massaged cows. Lazy Pinguin and I got a Tomahawk steak. Really good. Their interior and graphic design of the menu is really well designed. I might write¬†a full post for them, only my¬†food pictures are a bit blurry. So I need to go back to make better ones ūüėõ They served a little gem salad with Sriracha and onion compote which was soooo good! Spicy, sweet, crunchy.. one dish just was not enough.

By the way, Lazy Pinguin is mastering the art of sous vide. Sous vide is putting ingredients in a plastic bag, putting the plastic bag in water and cook for a while. Meat and fish that comes out of this bag is sooo soft and juicy (after a quick burn in the pan). My steak expectations have skyrocketed since, no steak in a restaurant can beat the sous vide steak. Maybe the Kobe beef in Japan. This Tomahawk steak was quite good for a restaurant, but compared to sous vide steak, no.

La Tasca – Delft

dessert la Tasca delft

There a two kind of restaurant which I assume are good for going back: authentic food (reminds me of the good old food) and new food experiences (things I have never ate/experienced before). La Tasca is a restaurant for new food experiences. They offer a fixed surprise menu every period of time. The chef will pick the seasonal ingredients of that time and create dishes with it. The taste, textures and ingredients are always surprising. This was my second visit and I was still very pleased with all the tastes and experiences. The pasta was really good this time (also the first time).  Oh no wonder, they are an Italian restaurant with influences of Spain and France.

Kiroren Restaurant – Rotterdam

big chicken plate kiroren

Went for a second time to Kiroren¬†Restaurant to taste that authentic Xinjiang food. We tried the chicken we didn’t have last time, with the secret powder recipe, but we were not so impressed. The big chicken dish with pulled flat noodles is still our favorite chicken. The owner told us that they had revised the big chicken dish, to let it taste more like the authentic one in China. But honestly, we liked their first version better. That was really an explosion of taste in your mouth. This new revised recipe was a bit softer, still good none the less, but we had tasted something nicer before to compare it with. I will update my old Kiroren post with the new photos and experiences. I will do that over the weekend.

Roast Chicken Bar – Delft

roast chicken bar delft

I like restaurants which specialize in something. This one only has roasted chicken; marinated perfectly, crispy skin, darn good pulled chicken over fries, tomato chutney¬†and apple compote. Good food, trendy and hip interior, huge kitchen to look in. I visited this place today, so it’s still fresh in my mind/mouth. They only started 13 weeks ago, but already had quite some customers on a stormy evening. They also offer breakfast and lunch stuff from 10:00 from The Egg Store. That’s also a brand in the same restaurant. Interesting… eggs and chicken.
