Djebena ~ East-African food in Delft

The beginning…

About two years ago, Lazy Bear and I went to the center of Delft to meet up with Lazy Monkey (new Lazy friend!). Lazy Monkey was having a late dinner 21:00 at Djebena. He was sitting outside with a plate of gooey spinach and a pancake. He let us try it and we were sold! We also ordered a spinach (Hamli) dish for ourselves, even though we already had dinner.. But when you can eat good food, your stomach just opens up a secret pocket to fill in more delicious food.

That was the start of our East-African food relationship. Since then I have been there for about 5 times. The food is really delicious and tasty.

Spinach dish. It doesn’t look very pretty, but it is sooo good!

When you have ordered your dish, you will get your meat and veggies on a shared pancake dish with your eating companions. You can eat everything with your hand. Take a piece of pancake and grab some meat or veggie. I always want to eat the spinach dish, so I often order the 4 veggies surprise meal. The 4 meat surprise meal is also very nice. Some meats are a bit spicy.

In the photo you see Lazy Bear’s meat surprise dish and my veggie surprise dish. Sharing = more food tasting!

The pancake has little holes, because it is fermented. It also tastes a bit sour, but that matches really well with all the toppings.

They also offer a range of fruit beers. I tried all of them, and I like the coconut the best. The alcohol percentage is not very high, 3.7% to 7%. The mango juice is also really recommended. Mmmm…
The price for a dish and some drinks is about 20 euro p.p.

Kek – Top coffee spot in Delft

Kek is my favorite coffee place in the Netherlands. It has a good vibe, relaxing music, fun interior design. Full with “frutsels”/designy things you can buy. And I really like their service. Always with a true smile and very thoughtful.

The first time I visited them with my mother, I ordered a Chai latte. I think a new employee made it, but the boss brought it. When she arrived at the table, she said: oh wait, I will make you a new one, it doesn’t look pretty. That’s really good service I think. The things you give to the clients should be perfect. I might be biased after this experience, but my second visit was also very pleasant:

I was planning to have a breakfast there, before going to the dentist (yes, a lot of dentist in my recent stories). I browsed their rich menu, a lot of interesting things to choose from. Their menu design is also smart. Every page is a category, so you can easily browse through it.

I have seen such a category menu before at Stads-Koffyhuis in Delft and thought it was smart. Eventually I choose a smoothie “The Hulk”. Kek has a small stand in the front of the store where they show all the fruit and vegetables they use for their smoothies and other drinks.

After my photoshoot of my Hulk smoothie a customer from the other window table also ordered one, since I was so engrossed by the smoothie. The Kek waitress already had the drink ready, she made more than 1 portion. Smart; if you know that more people will order. Bad; if nobody orders soon and the nice green color will turn brown. Or drink it yourself…

It tasted really good! I choose it because it has advocado in it. Ever since I tasted advocado in a smoothie, I am sold!

I am sure in the future I will go to Kek again, then I will try more solid food and expend this blogpost.

Five Restaurants in February

A quick post for this week, since I don’t have a lot time to work on a big post. Looking back at the restaurants I have visited in February¬†I concluded that there are quite some places¬†I recommend. They have the food, which you will go back for. Sorry to the restaurants I didn’t post about, you were nice, but… it’s not you, it’s me.

Fika – Nijmegen

A Scandinavian lunch/brunch place. I heard from people that Scandinavian food is about quality and damn these sandwiches where good! Fresh ingredients, delicious smörrebröd and okay drinks. The tastes are quite strong, which I like. Next time I have to try the other sandwiches.

The Black Fox РNijmegen

theblackfox nijmegen

This is a butcher / meat workshop / restaurant. They get there cows from milk farms, so the cows were milk producing cows before. So the meat¬†is a bit tougher than massaged cows. Lazy Pinguin and I got a Tomahawk steak. Really good. Their interior and graphic design of the menu is really well designed. I might write¬†a full post for them, only my¬†food pictures are a bit blurry. So I need to go back to make better ones ūüėõ They served a little gem salad with Sriracha and onion compote which was soooo good! Spicy, sweet, crunchy.. one dish just was not enough.

By the way, Lazy Pinguin is mastering the art of sous vide. Sous vide is putting ingredients in a plastic bag, putting the plastic bag in water and cook for a while. Meat and fish that comes out of this bag is sooo soft and juicy (after a quick burn in the pan). My steak expectations have skyrocketed since, no steak in a restaurant can beat the sous vide steak. Maybe the Kobe beef in Japan. This Tomahawk steak was quite good for a restaurant, but compared to sous vide steak, no.

La Tasca – Delft

dessert la Tasca delft

There a two kind of restaurant which I assume are good for going back: authentic food (reminds me of the good old food) and new food experiences (things I have never ate/experienced before). La Tasca is a restaurant for new food experiences. They offer a fixed surprise menu every period of time. The chef will pick the seasonal ingredients of that time and create dishes with it. The taste, textures and ingredients are always surprising. This was my second visit and I was still very pleased with all the tastes and experiences. The pasta was really good this time (also the first time).  Oh no wonder, they are an Italian restaurant with influences of Spain and France.

Kiroren Restaurant – Rotterdam

big chicken plate kiroren

Went for a second time to Kiroren¬†Restaurant to taste that authentic Xinjiang food. We tried the chicken we didn’t have last time, with the secret powder recipe, but we were not so impressed. The big chicken dish with pulled flat noodles is still our favorite chicken. The owner told us that they had revised the big chicken dish, to let it taste more like the authentic one in China. But honestly, we liked their first version better. That was really an explosion of taste in your mouth. This new revised recipe was a bit softer, still good none the less, but we had tasted something nicer before to compare it with. I will update my old Kiroren post with the new photos and experiences. I will do that over the weekend.

Roast Chicken Bar – Delft

roast chicken bar delft

I like restaurants which specialize in something. This one only has roasted chicken; marinated perfectly, crispy skin, darn good pulled chicken over fries, tomato chutney¬†and apple compote. Good food, trendy and hip interior, huge kitchen to look in. I visited this place today, so it’s still fresh in my mind/mouth. They only started 13 weeks ago, but already had quite some customers on a stormy evening. They also offer breakfast and lunch stuff from 10:00 from The Egg Store. That’s also a brand in the same restaurant. Interesting… eggs and chicken.

Delft: The Haka – your healthy dose of food

The Haka is a small restaurant which serves healthy salads and other healthy food. I know it is part of the Pure Family, which is created by the owners of Hills & Mills.

I believe The Haka is the first restaurant to offer healthy food to your home (near Delft). In The Netherlands we can order from the website, but the restaurants on there are mainly fast food stuff. If you want to eat healthy, there is not a lot of choice.

About a year ago I ordered from their website with a few friends. We wanted to eat something healthy. Their website is very clear and I love the pretty photos of the food.

This week I thought of eating at the restaurant to check it out. To my surprise it was very small. There is only a counter where you can order and see the ingredients of the salads and drinks they offer. Upstairs is the kitchen I assume. There is a high table near the window inside and 4 sitting spots outside.

The food

I had a chicken salad and a vegetable soup. The chicken salad was nice, it had a light sauce, don’t know which one. The soup was very strong from taste, I liked it. My friends ordered a vermicelli Thai dish, it was quite light from taste. It could have been stronger, since Thai food is usually quite strong from taste.

The Menu

The menu is designed very well. Clear icons for vegetarian, gluten free etc.

Too bad they don’t have a lot of warm choices, because I still prefer warm food. Okay, but they are a salad bar. Can’t have everything..

While we were eating there outside, we attracted  a lot of Asian tourists to the place. I guess Asians follow Asians hah. Or people follow people, to keep is less racial. That should be a strategy for restaurants. People attract people, much like sheeps. Follow each other… If there are people, it must be good.

Eastern Snackhouse ~ Chinese food in Delft

When you want to find a good traditional Chinese restaurant, follow the Chinese. They usually know the authentic places. Don’t expect a lot of friendly talk with the service, because it’s all about having the food fast. Exactly how I like it. Eat first, talk later.
Delft Eastern snackbar-02

In Delft (NL) there is also a small gem where you can get delicious Chinese food. They also serve some Japanese and Indonesian dishes. But you should go for the Chinese food, because the owners are Chinese. The last time I went there I tried their congee for the first time. The owner suggested to have it with surimi sticks instead of chicken. And it was a very good choice! The congee was salty enough, thick enough. Oh wait. It wasn‚Äôt congee, because there was no rice in it. Soup I guess then.. ÁéČÁĪ≥śĪ§ (corn soup)

It has: surimi sticks, egg swirls, corn.. It’s so good! I recommend it. Here is a drawing of it:

Delft Eastern snackbar-01

The lady owner is also very friendly. If you can talk Chinese, she will have a little chat with you and it feels like talking to a mom in a home environment. Really lovely ^^

And of course the food is also very good. I don’t really know the names of the dishes, but you can ask her for the best Chinese dishes. Don’t pick the rice + some meat dishes (for one person), but pick veggie and meat dishes. Share with your friends and you can try a lot of good stuff. Oh and did I say it is quite cheap? Go! Go!
